Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc-Nickel (14022)
By Dr. S. Alec Watson, reprinted from Transactions of the Institute of Metal Finishing, Vol. 70 (1), 1992. The automotive industry is increasingly using preplated steel coil for body shells in order to increase the service life of vehicles. Zinc-nickel and zinc-iron alloys have been developed to raise resistance to corrosion compared with plain zinc of equal thickness on steel, but only zinc-nickel is used in Europe. Electrodeposited zinc-nickel is also used increasingly to replace plain zinc in order to upgrade the performance of components plated in conventional plating plants. Performance of the alloy coatings is discussed.
